Whitelist or Leave Our Website! Advances in the Understanding of User Response to Anti-Ad-Blockers

Website publishers cannot monetize the ad impressions that are prevented by ad-blockers. Publishers can then employ anti-ad-blockers force users to choose between either accepting whitelisting website in ad-blocker, or leaving without accessing content. This study delineates mechanisms of how willingness whitelist/leave affected request’s sensitivity recipients as well users’ psychological reactance and evaluation advertising. We tested proposed relationships using an online panel sample 500 ad-blocker users, who were asked about their favorite newspaper after receiving a hypothetical anti-ad-blocker request—four alternative requests with different levels created randomly assigned participants. The results confirmed (a) improve recipient’s compliance, (b) plays important role explaining overall phenomenon, (c) favorable advertising whitelist. These findings help better understand user response may also increase whitelist ratios.
